My name is Melinda and I am 12 years old. All the kids know me because of my long red hair. I like that! My favorite thing in this whole world is MATH! I can spend hours playing math games. My teachers say that I am a smart kid. Well, I try to be! I also have a twin brother named Marcus who is super cool…but don’t tell him I said that!

Stage 3 - Transitional Reader

My name is Mr. Scrubit. Summersville is my hometown. I’m the custodian at school. I’ve worked there a very long time. But…I’ve loved every minute! The teachers and kids are like my family. I especially enjoy helping Miss Chalk’s class with projects and presentations. They can always count on me to lend a hand. Even though I use old-fashioned things, I still embrace the future. Who knows? I might learn how to use a computer this year!

My name is John. I was born in 1943 in New Mexico. My family and I now live in Phoenix, Arizona. I enjoy my private bike trips to the desert. When I’m there, I really soak in nature’s beauty. There’s nothing like feeling the warm sunshine on my shoulders. I watch birds fly and I want to fly with them! I may become an astronaut one day. I can imagine being in space and looking back at Earth. That would be Far Out! Maybe I should write some songs about those dreams. This guitar Grandmother gave me was meant for something. I’ll just strum my way up above the mountains and clouds!

Stage 3 - Transitional Reader

My name is Marcus. Along with my twin sister, Melinda, I enjoy going to Summersville Elementary School. Even though I’m not the best at sports, I can read more books in a week than any other kid in my grade! Whenever I get my hands on a science or history book, I am totally happy. I get lost in those pages. I love to experiment with new things that I’ve read about, but I’m always careful. Our teacher, Miss Chalk encourages me to explore the things I’m interested in through reading and observation. Maybe one day I’ll be a famous scientist … who knows?

Stage 4 - Intermediate Reader

My name is Kelly. I bet you’ve heard of me. Folks say that I’m the “class clown” because I’m always playing jokes. Hey, it’s true! I love to make people smile. There are too many frowners in this world, if you know what I mean. I have a great way of making my mom smile too. You see, I’m a pretty good speller and I always get good grades on my tests. It makes my mom so proud, she grins from ear to ear. It’s my favorite smile to see.

Stage 4 - Intermediate Reader

My name is Rachel. I was born in 1907 in Springdale, Pennsylvania. I love living on our family farm. Our house has a warm fireplace and honeysuckle vines near the front porch. My older siblings and I get to explore nearby ponds, fields and forests. You might even catch me climbing a tall tree! Mother always encourages us to study nature. I’m very fond of birds as well as creatures that live in water. My little notebook is full of things I’ve observed about them. Some people say I have a real talent with words. Penning stories about animals is just my way of learning and having fun!

Stage 4 - Intermediate Reader

My name is Miss Chalk. I teach history and science at Summersville Elementary school. School is never boring when I’m around! We have fun while we learn. When I was a little girl people said I couldn’t read very well. I decided right then that I would dedicate my life to books and helping other kids feel good about themselves. I love being a teacher! Even though I’ve taught for many years, everyday is still a new adventure. And when you have students, like Melinda, Marcus and Kelly, the adventures can be pretty awesome!
