Social Interactive Reading
Boosts Self-Esteem, Motivation, and Attention to Learning!

Reader's theater is a social interactive reading activity in which students participate in conversational dialogue with their peers as they read a story! Making reading into a social activity ensures that students will be interested and better able to improve their fluency and comprehension. With a social barometer giving feedback on their performance, they may even be motivated to practice on their own time with friends or family to become more confident reading with their peers!

Interactive or guided reading is vital to progress for young or struggling readers. Studies have shown that simply better access to books or reading alone has no effect on building reading skills for these students in need; only interactive or guided reading enables great strides in fluency and comprehension. With a typical teacher to student ratio, this necessary strategy can be difficult to attain, but with reader's theater the students serve as guides for each other, making interactive reading practical for any classroom setting.

The conversational group aspect of reader's theater provides extra incentive for full participation and enjoyment of the reading activity, but it also offers students the opportunity to cooperate, interact, and improve their social skills. Social interactive reading is especially valuable in summer, when students are vulnerable to learning loss, but advances in self-esteem and personal growth typically extend into the upcoming school year and beyond, serving academic as well as social success. Reader's theater is practically the only method (and the most fun!) of social interactive reading, so this important reading enrichment and fluency building tool needs your attention!

Planet Parade

(Image) The Planet Parade!

Our newest reader's theater story, Planet Parade, teaches students in Grades 4-7, fun and amazing facts about our solar system! Readers learn how important each planet's location is to its individual characteristics, and to keeping the solar system stabilized. After all, we are able to live on the Earth because it is just the right temperature, distance from the Sun, and has water and oxygen. If anything was different, we might not be here!

Story Synopsis:  The planets in our solar system have been moving around the sun along the same paths, for billions of years! That's a lot of time to keep do the same thing in the same place. Some planets have started to get bored, and even lonely! They are grumbling about their places in the solar system. After all, it can get a little too toasty if you are near the sun, but downright freezing if you’re too far away from it. When the planets contemplate trading their spots in the planet parade, will the solar system continue to operate like normal or will our planetary friends spin into chaos?

Your Summer School Needs!

Most students will have been encouraged to read by themselves over the summer. Some of them are probably excited to read! However, just reading alone will not typically help readers who are already struggling, and students reading at home are rarely monitored for speed, accuracy, expression, and comprehension. Only guided oral reading, easily provided by reader's theater in summer school or camp, can provide a measurable system and help struggling readers progress while having fun!
