Summer Camp Kits

In our last month's newsletter we discussed research shared by the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) regarding the importance of guided reading in reducing summer reading loss. We also discussed that Repeated Guided Oral Reading (RGOR) as the only proven method of building reading fluency. There was an error in the manner in which these were stated. This research was based on The National Reading Panel, not the NSLA, with respect to RGOR being the only proven method of building reading fluency. While the NSLA supports "Guided Reading" as being effective during the summer, it did not conduct research on this and does not endorse ours or any other specific products that address summer learning loss.

Playbooks® Camp Reader's Theater kits were created to combine the methods and effective results of Repeated Guided Oral Reading (RGOR) with summer learning in order to help students avoid or reduce summer learning loss. So be sure to consider these kits for your students.

Lend & Extend
Reader's Theater™

For Summer Break
Enhance parental involvement and reduce summer learning loss!

(Image) Lend and Extend Pack and Playbook Story Set

Even if you're not holding a summer program, you can still do your part to reduce summer reading loss by encouraging students to read with their families and friends over the summer with Lend and Extend Reader's Theater™.

This simple accessory pack allows you to split a typical one-story set of six books into three Lend & Extend™ take-home packs, designed to be checked out of the classroom or school library. Summer break is a perfect time to send home Playbooks® with students. With extra time away from school, families can enjoy reading together and keep the learning flowing through to the next school year!

It's also a good idea to purchase kits for classroom use before students leave for the summer, to introduce "roleplay reading" so they might try reading other books aloud, in character, with family and friends at home over the summer.

Take Center Stage™
Reader's Theater Acting Game

Take Center Stage™ is a hilarious stage acting game with reader's theater! Groups of students in educational programs, parents and their children, or kids and their friends read a script together and then play the game where they get to “over-act” scenes and lines from the story with funny expressions and character types, similar to the improvisational actors on the TV show, "Whose Line is it Anyway?"

Take Center Stage™ is available in the form of game packs designed to accompany certain titles. We offer game packs for 12 different Playbook® stories! View purchasing options and information.

Plus, send this free game sample home with your students to help support parent engagement over the summer break and beyond! Or, provide the following link to parents to print themselves at home!
