Reader's Theater Night

(Image) World Read Aloud Day Logo

World Read Aloud Day, promoting world literacy, takes place March 6, 2013! Participate by holding a family reader's theater night or simply doing reader's theater with your students. Engaging parents in reading with their children is one of the most important ways to support literacy in youth. (Additional ideas for activities can be found here.)

Invite your students' parents to come to school and read a reader's theater story in small groups with their children. Parents get to play a role in a reader's theater play right in the classroom! No practice or preparation needed, just give parents the easiest roles! Parents can gain insight on how to help their children improve reading skills at home, and both parents and students may love a chance to show off their acting abilities! Giving parents an opportunity to read aloud with expression may spark an interest in reading this way at home with their children.

When one of the characters, who is simply tagging along to help a friend, reminds them of God's Top 10, The 10 Commandments, they realize they could be breaking two of the commandments just by being there. What follows is a riveting discussion and interpretation of the 10 most important laws of the Bible. Together they explore and interpret each commandment and learn a fun mnemonic to help remember them. With contemporary and amusing dialogue, this story makes an inspiring and engaging performance. The story comes with discussion questions and includes more than 40 Bible references, making it a perfect Bible study project for teens and adults. Sends Anti-Bullying Message
Where it Has the Most Impact, Turns
Bystanders into
"Forstanders"

(Image) The Bully Games Book Cover
Story Synopsis: Filled with the most up to date anti-bullying ideologies, this story shows through the experiences of average teenagers how bystanders have the power to stop a bully in a matter of seconds simply by standing up for the victim with a few words! It also addresses the growing problem of cyber bullying.

www.stopbullying.gov

of Health & Human Services

This official federal web site provides many tips and tools for preventing bullying in schools and beyond, including how to respond to bullying when it happens and how to prevent it from happening in the first place.

The site highlights the amazing power of the bystander to change bullying outcomes and stop future incidents from occurring!

In a mysterious journey through cyberspace, five teenagers from across the country are sucked into their smart phones and transported to a small, white room, with only one object: a gigantic cell phone. Bewildered, they soon discover they are playing a real life video game! As they select options from the phone's menu, they are sent into five different bullying scenarios, where each person finds him or herself playing a different part: bystander, victim, or bully. As they decipher the meaning behind the game, the characters learn about the often misunderstood dynamics of bullying how becoming a "forstander" by standing up for the victim destroys the "Bully Games.”
