Reader's Theater Fulfills Common Core State Standards

(Image) Common Core State Standards Reader's theater meets nearly 50 objectives in the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy! Reference to drama is woven throughout the entire 66-page document, revealing reader's theater as applicable to sections addressing literature, language, fluency, and even writing. Per the elements in these standards, roleplay reading is an activity spanning every corner of the subject!

Review the following excerpts from the Standards directly involving drama
(these are just a few examples of many):

* Describe how a narrator’s or speaker’s point of view influences how events are described (RL 6.3).
* Analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a story or drama propel the action, reveal aspects of a character, or   provoke a decision (RL 8.3).
* Apply grade 5 Reading standards to literature (e.g., “Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in   a story or a drama, drawing on specific details in the text [e.g., how characters interact]”) (W 5.9).
* Compare and contrast the varieties of English (e.g., dialects, registers) used in stories, dramas, or poems (L 5.3).

In addition, the Reading Fluency standards call for the following: Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding (RF 4.4). Reader's theater lends itself to this very well by prompting students to constantly evaluate the events taking place in the story as they read their own roles and more attentively catch mistakes that do not make sense.

Designers of the Common Core State Standards Initiative have carefully crafted these standards through collaboration with experts, teachers, and education administrators in an effort to make curriculum requirements consistent across the nation, and by matching the guidelines to the highest standards, to raise the achievement levels of all students. So clearly, educational progressives recognize the far-reaching benefits of plays and expressive reading opportunities such as reader's theater.

While it's traditionally been considered supplementary reading, experts make a strong case that reader's theater should be adopted as an automatic best practice for all literacy curriculums from elementary through high school with support from the Common Core State Standards and more. Large text books may be a sure way to incorporate all the standards required for the classroom, but the pay off in student learning is much higher with interactive methods such as reader's theater. When students are engaged in and enjoy what they are reading, you are promoting effective literacy development, successful young people for the future ... and book lovers for life!

In this wacky script, A Turkey's Christmas Wish, Timmy the pet turkey is jealous that the Christmas holiday gets so much attention compared to Thanksgiving. In an attempt to prove that turkeys are important, too, he writes a letter to Santa Claus. Through a crazy chain of events and pure motivation, he learns to fly like his wild turkey cousins, and actually becomes the first turkey to pull Santa's sleigh alongside flying reindeer! Along for the adventure are Tessa and Jacob, who share their home with Timmy, and Birdie, the lovable, flying-obsessed reindeer. Students will love chanting along with all of Santa's reindeer about the "real turkey" who learns to fly!
